Abstract
This IDC Survey examines who in the organization are using augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) and what use cases they employ. We polled 306 commercial IT decision-makers about the primary users of AR and VR, what the primary use cases are today, and what they expect them to be next year.
"Knowledge workers and managers of knowledge workers represented the most popular users of both augmented reality and virtual reality," said Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Augmented and Virtual Reality team. "ARVR works best when bringing the right information to the right user at the right time. Following next were frontline workers, inclusive of managers of frontline workers. This presents vendors with specific users to target."
Use cases between AR and VR seem to vary. "With AR, the primary use cases have been training and collaboration, and these are expected to hold steady next year. AR vendors can lean into this with knowledge workers. With VR, no one or two use cases have emerged as the clear leaders, giving vendors multiple use cases to champion to potential customers."
