Abstract
This IDC Survey analyzes the state of foldable smartphones in the United States. In the spring of 2024, IDC surveyed 1,979 smartphone owners if they owned a foldable smartphone, and if they did, we also asked what brand they got and what they believed was the biggest advantage to a foldable smartphone. If they did not, we asked if they would consider getting a foldable smartphone in the future.
"Foldable smartphones started out as a novelty but have since continued to grow in volume and interest," said Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Mobile Phone team. "However, a closer look shows that middle-age and older users are warming up to them, even more than younger users. And if Apple decides to enter the foldable smartphone market, there is pent-up demand for that as well."
"As much as foldables bring larger displays and multitasking capabilities, our respondents found that the form factor — being able to fold it and fit it into one's pocket or bag — as its biggest advantage," adds Llamas. "With such attention to form instead of function, vendors would do well to highlight foldables' capabilities to drive interest and, ultimately, purchase."
