Abstract

This IDC Survey analyzes the state of refurbished smartphones in the United States. In spring 2024, IDC surveyed 1,979 smartphone owners if they owned a refurbished smartphone, and if they did, we also asked where they purchased it, how much it cost, and what brand they got. If they did not, we asked if they would consider getting a refurbished smartphone in the future.

"Refurbished smartphones offer consumers lower prices and significant cost savings, yet only 23.5% of our survey participants said they purchased one," said Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Mobile Phones team. "However, a closer look shows that younger users are more likely to get a refurbished device than older users, and that habit can carry forward.

"The amount of money that a potential buyer can save is significant," adds Llamas. "Compared with purchasing a new unused smartphone, our data shows that consumers can cut their spend nearly in half."
