Abstract
This IDC Tech Buyer Presentation provides key information for decision-makers across U.S. cities on the Level 4 (self-driving) autonomous mobility space and research on key stakeholders, AV shuttle operators, regulations, business models, and opportunities for public–private partnerships.
As cities across the United States grapple with traffic congestion and sustainability challenges, many consider autonomous public transit a forward-thinking solution. Urban planners from San Francisco to Austin are piloting self-driving buses and shuttles to create more efficient and eco-friendly transportation networks. These autonomous systems are expected to reduce traffic accidents, lower emissions, and offer on-demand services that better align with the needs of modern commuters.
The recent advancement in AV development with GenAI has enabled several AV companies to simplify development and validation efforts, accelerating the timelines for introducing AVs for passenger transit on public roads. With the number of AVs poised to skyrocket, several major cities are also introducing new regulations, such as the involvement of public safety agencies for clearance need to integrate and enable vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication. Also, new opportunities for tech vendors to aid cities with products and services to manage AV fleet operating in the cities are emerging.
