Abstract
This IDC Perspective discusses the potential benefits and challenges of using generative AI (GenAI) in electoral processes. It highlights how GenAI can enhance productivity, expedite content creation, and enable hyper-personalization in political campaigns. However, it also raises concerns about the misuse of GenAI for spreading disinformation, voter suppression, and cyberattacks on election infrastructure. The document concludes with recommendations for governments to mitigate these risks, including transparency, public education, third-party audits, and regulatory alignment.
According to Alison Brooks, IDC research vice president, Worldwide Public Safety, "GenAI will likely both benefit and beleaguer the electoral process, raising concerns about its impact on misinformation, voter suppression, and election security. Government agencies are advised to immediately proactively mitigate these negative impacts by leveraging a set of emerging technologies and focusing on adapting the policy and regulatory environment."
