Abstract
This IDC Perspective discusses how to enable adaptive quality execution with synergistic test automation strategies. Common responses to questions about software quality maturity indicate that despite the evolution of continuous testing, increases in adoption, and double-digit growth for automated software quality (ASQ) revenue in 2021, test automation is ad hoc for many organizations that continue to rely on manual testing. Just as business units are heavily focused on improving the cycle times of business operations with intelligent process automation, IT is also pressured to improve cycle times in IT operations.
"Identifying where staff in IT operations are spending time on manual, repetitive, error-prone software testing tasks creates an opportunity to replace those tasks with automation," said Melinda Ballou, research director for IDC's Agile ALM, Quality, and Portfolio Strategies. "Replacing manual steps in testing represents a target-rich environment for robotic process automation (RPA). At the same time, there are synergistic opportunities to improve the quality of RPA in production with test automation and process strategies."
