Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective examines digital sovereignty initiatives in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) (APEJ). The concept of digital sovereignty has slowly gained prominence worldwide in the last five years in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, worldwide geopolitical turmoil, and trade tensions posing new challenges to businesses in the region. Although a sovereign state can be defined as having administrative power and jurisdiction over its permanent population, digital sovereignty in the business and technology context has a greater degree of complexity. IDC defines digital sovereignty as "the capacity for digital self-determination by nations, companies, or individuals."

"As a result of heightened digital sovereignty concern, businesses in the APEJ are now paying close attention to sovereignty requirements to ensure compliance with local regulations while remaining cognizant to the potential challenges digital sovereignty might bring," says James Sivalingam, senior program manager, IDC Asia/Pacific.
