Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses six key characteristics that can be used to evaluate and select workloads for cloud migration, especially during the early phase of a cloud adoption journey, when internal operational expertise and process efficiency are also in early stages. This document extends research that IDC has built as part of its Cloud Infrastructure Index study of service provider infrastructure and its U.S. Cloud Migration study of enterprise and service provider migration activity.

"As enterprise IT organizations realize the increasingly important role that cloud is playing in its survival today and will play in its success in the future, some cloud adoption journeys are beginning, while others are accelerating or expanding," said Kuba Stolarski, research director, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies at IDC. "As most of these organizations have existing application portfolios that cannot easily be discarded and replaced, migration of these applications becomes a critical and often first step in the cloud adoption journey. Making informed decisions about which workloads to migrate can not only help ensure a successful migration but also set a course for a future where cloud can become an engine for business agility and growth."
