Abstract
This IDC Perspective discusses the critical budgeting challenge faced by CIOs and business leaders — balancing the tension of longer-term technology projects with the short-term imperatives confronting the business. New customer requirements, likely requiring new IT capabilities, are manifesting themselves and will impact the organization's ability to stay in sync with evolving market opportunities. Deciding which longer-term projects may be de-emphasized to enable these new requirements — while working within the new financial constraints faced by many organizations —will separate organizations that thrive 24 months in the future.
"The IT budget is a robust tool that many organizations use to facilitate their decision-making around spending priorities and needed outcomes," says Joe Pucciarelli, group vice president of IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "CIOs and technology leaders who embrace the broader context of these 'budget' negotiations have the opportunity to deliver outsized contributions to their organizations."
