Abstract
This IDC Perspective discusses new research that shows exactly how an increasing number of CIOs are moving from technology leadership into chief operating officer (COO) and chief executive officer (CEO) positions. The research identified three areas of mastery influencing CIO career progression: work experience, environmental factors, and personal attributes. With those areas of mastery accounted for, the research shows that there are six specific approaches that a CIO must address to become a CEO. No single action is better than the others, and success in all six does not guarantee a promotion for the CIO. Nonetheless, successful CIOs who had been promoted recommended the six approaches based on their own personal experience.
"The CIO role is one of the best for preparing an individual for promotion to CEO," says Dr. Ron Babin, adjunct analyst with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "Increasingly, organizations rely on technology that the CIO is responsible for. However, if they want to be promoted, CIOs must prepare by developing their business understanding and their personal capabilities to position themselves to become executive leaders."
