Abstract

This IDC Perspective examines how hyperscalers are turning to nuclear energy to address the rising demands of AI and achieve their sustainability goals. It looks at the potential benefits and risks of nuclear power, including the shift toward small modular reactors (SMRs), and the broader role hyperscalers may play in the energy transition.

"Nuclear energy is emerging as a key solution for hyperscalers to meet AI's energy demands while achieving sustainability goals," said Angela Salmeron, research director, IDC Energy Insights. "While it remains uncertain whether nuclear can meet the tight timelines hyperscalers require, this could mark the beginning of a new era where Big Tech plays a central role in energy transition policy and infrastructure."
