Abstract

This IDC Perspective analyzes how European governments are operationalizing sustainability, focusing on the fundamental step of how they are measuring and reporting their environmental impact. The report provides a deep dive on French and British government institutions. The report will provide an overview of the core components of environmental sustainability reporting, government reporting requirements, current measurement and reporting practices, main challenges, and opportunities for data and technology to play an enabling role.

"Governments are expected to be leaders in the green transition, demonstrating best practices in reducing emissions and promoting transparency. Yet, many European governments still do not have foundational sustainability practices in place, including effectively measuring their carbon footprint and broader environmental impact. While the direction of travel toward more sustainable practices and net zero is clear, the route is not linear, and some European governments are experiencing a period of turbulence," Louisa Barker, senior research manager, IDC Government Insights, Europe.
