Abstract
This IDC Survey examines the adoption status of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions among organizations of all sizes in Canada at the end of 2023. It provides insights to the IoT vendor ecosystem to better understand the relative maturity by solution and by industry, enabling more precise marketing, communications, and sales. The analysis encourages Canadian businesses to benchmark their progress against their local industry peer group.
High-level findings include:
- Adoption of IP-based connected solutions ("IoT") is extremely common (92%) in Canadian businesses, whether named "IoT" or just considered part of the business workflow — and adoption continues to grow through the planned use of more IoT solutions (78% plan to invest in an IoT solution within the next two years).
- Adopters of IoT solutions tend to adopt even more IoT solutions as they try to evolve through their digital transformation.
- IoT solution deployments fail and are removed from organization use far more often than commonly expected; 21% of respondents reported having removed at least one IoT deployment from use.
- The most common IoT solution remains IP-enabled digital video surveillance, but other cross-industry options like smart buildings, connected workforce, and fleet tracking are gaining rapidly.
- There is wide variation between industry segments in their adoption maturity, and vendors need to match marketing/sales accordingly. This document examines IoT solution adoption by vertical segment in depth.
