Abstract

This IDC Market Analysis Perspective (MAP) outlines the state of 5G adoption across Asia/Pacific in 2024. 5G will have the fastest ramp up of any cellular generation so far. Early deployments in South Korea and China in 2019 and in emerging markets, such as India, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, have all seen communications SPs rapidly roll out 5G networks. As the China, South Korea, Australia, Singapore markets mature, with flattish or decreasing 5G net adds, India and Southeast Asia will rise significantly from 2026 to 2028, the end of the forecast period. Radio access network (RAN) remains the segment in which most capex is used, followed by significant investments in transport networks as well as internal IT and operational support system/business support system (OSS/BSS).

This study focuses on the enterprise adoption of 5G. Enterprises are slowly adopting 5G as part of their network transformation journey to cater to digitization initiatives and a hybrid workforce. Further, this document will look at market trends and outlook and drivers and challenges in 5G enterprise offerings. Just as CSPs have upgraded to LTE-Advanced as the 4G/Long-Term Evolution (LTE) market has matured, a similar trend will play out as 5G matures; the upgrade to 5.5G or 5G-Advanced is imminent. Additionally, Third-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 17 specifications introduced 5G reduced capability (5G RedCap) to bolster the use of 5G in Internet of Things (IoT)/machine-to-machine (M2M) deployments. 5G RedCap opens the door for cost-effective devices and better battery life, making it a realistic option for IoT deployments compared with full-blown 5G-based IoT devices.

"5G momentum across Asia/Pacific will continue to make waves," says Swathi Arunaa, senior research analyst, IDC Asia/Pacific. Arunaa adds, "As we approach the later years of the forecast period, China, Japan India, and Southeast Asia will drive massive volumes of 5G enterprise adoption in the region. In terms of the revenue mix, IDC expects that total mobile revenues for communications SPs will hit US$331 billion in Asia/Pacific in 2028, driven by a growing 5G ecosystem and end-user adoption."
